Aims of the Department

During the course of the academic year, pupils cover a variety of topics using different situations to help them understand the different concepts and to use and apply in everyday life. The aim is for the pupils to leave at the end of Year 11 with qualifications in readiness for their next stage of education.

 

What we cover in Key Stage 3.

Each year group has 6 1/2 hour sessions during the week.

The pupils access a varied curriculum, covering all aspects of maths which develop the skills required for future qualifications. The topics covered are:
4 operations

Graphs - collating, presenting, interpreting

Basic algebra and Equations

Geometry

Probability

Sequences

Area and Perimeter

Co-ordinates

Fractions, decimals and Percentages

Ratio

 

What we cover in Key Stage 4.
Each year group has 6 1/2 hour sessions during the week.

The pupils access a varied curriculum, covering all aspects of maths which develop the skills required for the GCSE/Entry Level Certificate qualifications required for their next stages of education.

We follow the AQA GCSE specification and at the end of the 2 years, 3 exams are sat - 1 non-calculator, 2 calculator papers. These are 1 1/2 hours long. Pupils are graded between 1- 5 in the foundation paper and 4 - 9 in the higher paper.
